ABSTRACT
Although extensive research has been conducted on the complex nature of P2P networks, there is still a lack of systematic understanding on the cause of these complexities. In particular, the issue of how the internal operating mechanism and structure exactly lead to the external and observable behaviors in P2P networks still needs to be further investigated. Considering that the traffic flow between two individual peers in a P2P network is fundamental in shaping the entire P2P network behavior, that we know little about such information because none of the existing measurement tools is capable of determining the traffic flow between a pair ofpeers, and that BitTorrent (BT) is the primary P2P application and serves as one of the most important file-sharing tools on the Internet, we in this short paper (1) present a mathematical model that formulates the traffic behavior between any pair of peers in BT network; (2) show the feasibility of the model via a Matlab simulation; (3) carry out a traffic analysis based on this model; and (4) summarize the contribution of the paper.
