ABSTRACT
The article focuses on the value of certification. Certification for IT staff and users is still growing in popularity. To date, more than 1.7 million people have gained Microsoft Corp. certification alone and, last year, the number of current Microsoft Certified Professionals grew by 36 per cent, despite the industry downturn. Plymouth & South Devon Health Informatics Service provides IT support and training to hospitals and primary-care centres from Torquay to Plymouth. It has just completed a pilot project designed to help some 350 staff gain the European Computer Driving Licence qualification. Both the employers and the individual learner have definite views about the value of certification and it is often the case that a company's attitude to IT and training generally will affect how it is perceived. Certification helps to make sure that the staff within IT are trained to a certain level of competence in a particular product.
