ABSTRACT
IT'S A 100-MILE stretch of some of the most breathtaking scenery in Ireland. The border rolls through green hills and majestic mountains until it touches the Atlantic, where the coastal views are among the best in the world. It sweeps through the lake district, through sleepy, quaint towns and bustling cities to surfing villages, along the way taking visitors through some of the most historically important parts of Ireland. But that beauty and significance mask a dark and terrifying lawlessness. What are not so evident are the gangs terrifying young families and pensioners, the boy racers and car thieves who operate across two jurisdictions with near immunity. The rolling hills hide the low-level drug dealers and the high-ranking provos who make millions without fear of prosecution. There are gangs cunningly familiar with the twisting, treelined roads, smuggling everything from cigarettes to fuel to sex workers.
