The article focuses on the research by the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) to attain better outcomes from the U.S. weapon acquisition programs. It discusses the plans of the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) to acquire more than 75 major weapon systems in the U.S. It analyses how coordination between the U.S. Congress and DOD, and sound management practices, such as realistic cost estimating, and prototyping, can make the weapon acquisition program more beneficial.
