ABSTRACT
On Saturday, October 4, despite an intermittent drizzle and a persistent chill, over 100,000 attended the Immigrant Workers Freedom Ride Rally and Festival in Meadow-Corona Park in Queens, New York. The rally marked the final stop on a two-week cross-country trek by 900 immigrants in a caravan that departed from such far-flung cities as Seattle, Washington, San Francisco, California and Minneapolis, Minnesota. Organized by a nationwide coalition of labor unions, civil rights and human rights groups, immigrants' advocates and religious organizations, the IWFR were modeled after the 1960s Freedom Rides of the Civil Rights Era. The IWFR highlighted four major demands: legalization and a "road to citizenship," family reunification, immigrants rights in the workplace, and civil rights and civil liberties for all.
