ABSTRACT
This article in the wake of ongoing process of absorption of new immigrants in Israel, discusses the position of communication leaders in different immigrant groups and in different communication situations. The study is mainly concerned with two interdependent problems--The place of the process of communication within the social structure, and the conditions under which this process is effective or ineffective. This report is based mainly on investigations conducted in four immigrant settlements--two agricultural cooperative settlements, one semi-urban, and one urban settlement. The immigrants were exposed to various types of communications--Communications related to the economic sphere, cultural and educational communications, political communication and propaganda. The author finds that communications concerning the technical aspects of new social roles are more effectively transmitted than are those relating to institutional values and symbols.
