ABSTRACT
WHEN it comes to bad stuff in banking, the name of Fred Goodwin still looms large. The Wall Street Journal points out the desperate problems of the world's oldest bank Monte dei Paschi di Siena can be traced back to the Royal Bank of Scotland's carve up of ABN Amro at a dinner hosted by Goodwin at a Michelin-starred restaurant in Geneva in 2007. The Benelux bit of the bank would be ceded to Fortis (which went bust) and ABM's Italian offshoot Banca Antonveneta sold to Banco Santander of Spain.
