ABSTRACT
The French-born CEO Jean-Pierre Garnier of GlaxoSmithKline PLC has been pilloried for his huge salary demands, but he's not sorry. He and his executives will have earned their high rewards, he insists, if they deliver vital medicines to a world in dire need. Rebuilding its drugs pipeline is 'make or break' for his firm. Garnier comes with a reputation as grumpy, grudging, Gallic. Garnier made an immediate impact in British investment circles in 2003 with his response to having an $18 million pay and options package voted out by shareholders. European by nature, he doesn't see himself as caught up in the average American CEO's obsession with money and 'props', as he puts it, private jets, exclusive golf clubs, and super-rich lifestyle.
