ABSTRACT
This article presents the message of the editor to the readers of the April 5, 2004 issue of the U.S. periodical InforWorld. This issue marks the launch of Product Previews, this section presents highly informed impressions of new hardware, software and services. The section aims for an opinionated, shoot-from-the-hip style that will highlight the latest features, approaches and technologies. The Hands On section will round out the page. many reviews products will get the full lab-based Test Center treatment in the subsequent issues. The article Color Printers: The Full Spectrum is a lab-based analysis of 13 workgroup color printers. Old hands hereabouts assure me that printer coverage is not truly new at InfoWorld. We have reviewed printers in the past, but it was so long ago that the dates are shrouded in mystery. In fact, it seems all the information technology magazines have abandoned major competitive reviews of these machines, possibly because printers are seen as commodity purchases. Because we have a renewed commitment to testing all critical enterprise products, we put on our back braces and ordered up leading printers from nine manufacturers. Out lengthy battery of quantitative and qualitative tests revealed substantial differences in speed, print quality, manageability and consumables costs.
