ABSTRACT
The article discusses the legal and historical aspects of America's freedom of speech and religion rights under the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, and it mentions a judicial shift towards self-regarding justifications of speech involving self-actualization and individual autonomy during the twentieth century. The concept of sickness unto death of the First Amendment, which deals with anxiety and dissatisfaction, American law, and culture, is assessed.
