ABSTRACT
The article offers information about the history of the Middle East between 1940 and 2000. The state of Israel is created in 1948. Arab countries near Israel (Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, and Syria) attack the new country in 1948 but fail to destroy it. Israel and its neighbors fight wars again in 1956, 1967, and 1973. Israel wins each war. Much of the oil we use comes from the Arabian peninsula in the Middle East. For a brief time in 1973-1974, Arab nations would not let their oil be sold to the United States because of its support of Israel. In 1991, the United States and its allies go to war with Iraq after Iraq invades Kuwait. Iraq is defeated and signs a peace agreement but is accused of violating it. In 2003, the U.S. and Britain invade Iraq and remove the regime of Saddam Hussein. Tensions between Israel and the Palestinians increase, fueled by suicide bombings by Palestinians, and Israeli military actions in the occupied territories.
