In the article, the author discusses how to help immigrant students or English language learners (ELL) in their education by focusing on their strengths rather than their deficits. Also cited are her experiences in teaching immigrants and refugees in the U.S., the country's immigrant education programs, and her proposed strategies in teaching ELLs like implementing high academic standards, valuing native languages, and collaboration with immigrant families.
