ABSTRACT
This article presents comments of government officials regarding Petro-Canada Inc., which was created by Pierre Trudeau's Liberal government in 1975, largely to safeguard the domestic energy supply. Ever since, elected officials have faced pressure to privatize the oil giant. James Gillies, Conservative MP in 1975, said "surely, if ever there was a time when we should pause and reflect on expanding government activities, it is now." Anne McLellan, then natural resources minister, announced in 1995 that the feds will reduce their holdings in Petro-Canada to roughly 20% from 70%.
