ABSTRACT
This article explores the British plans to expand its nuclear power industry. Presently, nuclear power provides around 20 per cent of British energy needs. Yet it's believed that a number of those at the top of the Department of Trade and Industry (DII) believe the nuclear option could cater for up to half of Britain's electricity needs by 2050. Great Britain has not built any new plants for over a decade and most of its reactors are scheduled to close over the next 20 years. Britain said in its energy White Paper that its aim of reducing carbon could be achieved via renewable energy sources which now accounts for 3 per cent of its electricity supplies and is expected to expand to around 10 per cent in 2020.
