ABSTRACT
This article reports that renewed worries about runaway global warming reached fever pitch this week, as the story got top billing in British newspapers and was repeated by media worldwide. An observatory atop the Mauna Loa volcano in Hawaii and other stations scattered around the world have recorded an unprecedented rise in carbon dioxide levels of more than 2 parts per million in each of the past two years. A spokesperson for the British government echoes this opinion that one or two years' high increases do not mean a departure from the trend, it is normal to expect fluctuations in any set of data.
