ABSTRACT
This article discusses the need for reauthoring recordable DVDs. The need for a fully playable DVD, plus the built-in capability to reopen and reauthor its contents arose directly from the development of set-top DVD recorders, which has to be able to record material to a disc in multiple sessions, as well as edit and rerecord to a DVD-formatted disc. This is where the video recording DVD formats originated, with the bonus of exchanging re-editable discs between the set top and the desk top. Similarly, Sonic Solution Inc. developed the OpenDVD format to support re-editing discs in its authoring tools.
