ABSTRACT
This article presents a summary of the activities on the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT). The fourth annual report prepared for the Contracting Parties to the GATT was divided into three sections, dealing respectively with: recent developments in the structure and pattern of international trade; developments in commercial policy; and the principal activities of the Contracting Parties during the period under review. The report examined several aspects of the intensification of cooperation between industrial countries and the endeavor to lower production costs. The fourth GATT tariff conference was held from January 18 to May 23, 1956. The Contracting Parties engaged in some 60 intergovernmental negotiations for the stabilization or reduction of tariff barriers.
