ABSTRACT
The article reports that following recommendations from the Swiss government and parliament, that people and cantons accept a new law, which will boost stem cell research in Switzerland, the electorate has overwhelmingly voted in favor. The new law allows the creation of embryonic stem cells for research from the "surplus" embryos generated in the course of IVF treatment. Following the introduction of the new law, a group of committees opposing this type of research then collected more than 50,000 signatures, which enabled them to demand that the government organize this vote on the issue.
