ABSTRACT
The article presents information on the geographic and socio-demographic conditions of Malaysia, with special emphasis on its national defense. Spread across 329,293 square kilometers, Malaysia houses 23,522,482 people, as of July 2004 estimates. Officially, the literacy rate in Malaysia is 83%. The National Defence Policy of Malaysia mirrors the nation's desire to defend its strategic interests and to protect national security, and emphasizes the need to maintain a stable and peaceful area. The national strategic interests involve the immediate, regional and global areas. The defence of Malaysia revolves around the main principles of self-reliance, regional cooperation, and foreign assistance.
