ABSTRACT
This paper contributes to the existing literature on forced migration by presenting a dynamic model of factors influencing the choice of the destination country. The reasons usually presented (colonial bonds, geographical proximity) are in certain cases unable to provide a satisfactory explanation for the destination choices of groups of candidate refugees. We propose the phenomenon of herd behaviour as an additional explanatory factor. The explanation of herd behaviour should be considered together with the other more traditional explanations in order to get more insight into the decision processes candidate refugees undertake concerning their destination choice.
