What about Our Passions as Teachers?: Incorporating Individual Interests in Emergent Curricula

The article explores the possibility of incorporating individual teacher interests in emergent curricula. Perhaps teachers' interests as well as those of children could inform and mold curriculum. Only a limited amount of professional literature celebrates the inclusion of teachers' passions in classroom practice. The incorporation of teachers' passions with learning content might lower the rate of teacher burnout and the possibility of student disengagement from curricula that isolate students and teachers. Having interests and having passions are not only exciting but also important to learning and growing in multidimensional ways. Good teaching means declaring that a classroom belongs not just to the teacher or to the students but to both. Success presupposes that teachers are respected, cared about and persons in whom children believe. Stretching the boundaries of curriculum to incorporate teacher passions and interests can empower children to further their own development and growth and spark an enduring interest in interests.
