ABSTRACT
The article presents information on a report published by the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) regarding the challenges in estimating the costs of student loans to the federal government. The GAO has conceded that accurate cost estimates of student loans is difficult to achieve because: predictions and rates change affect the actual number of loans; and cost estimates do not include administrative expenses, risks and tax revenues paid by lenders.
