ABSTRACT
This article reports on Dover Area School District in Pennsylvania and the lawsuit brought over the teaching of the Theory of Evolution and Intelligent Design (ID) in public schools in the region. In December 2005 a judge ruled that Intelligent Design could not be taught in the Dover Area School District on the grounds that it was not science. The ruling by Judge John E. Jones III brought to an end the practice of reading to students a lengthy and detailed statement, purporting to encourage academic freedom, suggesting that Intelligent Design was just as valid a theory as evolution and subtly implied that ID was science. Many teachers refused to read the statement. Judge Jones found the tactics of the ID movement to based on religious, rather than scientific, reasoning.
