ABSTRACT
This article reports on political events in Taiwan in 2006. The island nation has long been claimed by the mainland as being part of China, a assertion vigorously denied by president Chen Shui-bian. Chen's popularity in Taiwan has declined and he is expected to be defeated in 2008 elections by his major rival Ma Ying-jeou, the leader of the Kuomintang Party. Ma is a moderate who is expected to be less shrill than Chen on the subject of Taiwanese independence, thus lessening tensions between Taipei and Beijing.
