ABSTRACT
This article focuses on an a trend of increasing obesity in the United States. The trend towards obesity is on the rise despite the society's preoccupation with image and the popularity of weight-loss pills, programs, and surgeries. The Centers for Disease Control defines obesity as an excessive accumulation of body fat relative to lean body mass. In recent years, obesity has been getting more attention from policymakers, scholars, and health officials. A study by the National Center for Health Statistics of the period from 1999-2002 found that 65% of Americans over 20 years of age are either overweight or obese.
