The article talks about the cathodic protection systems for pipeline maintenance. A significant threat for pipeline operators is the external corrosion. Owners fight aging systems with deteriorating coating systems that can have a negative impact on the effectiveness of the protection systems. Cathodic protection is used to enhance the coating system which is the first line of defense against corrosion. This coating system acts as a barrier to protect the steel pipe from its environment. The cathodic protection provides protective current to the defects within the coating system.
