John Donovan fed information about Shell's environmental abuses to Russian environmental watchdog Rosprirodnadzor. With the approval of President Vladimir Putin, Rosprirodnadzor charged the Shell-led oil consortium with environmental abuses, allowing Russia to gain the oil revenues it has been losing to Shell in a 1990s production-sharing agreement.
