ABSTRACT
The article focuses on the decision of North America-based Valero Energy Corp. to turn to service-oriented architecture (SOA). It has changed its strategy to integrate its disparate applications and let business users build their own software. The company has been on a fast growth track through corporate buyouts and among its major purchases include the 2005 $8 billion acquisition of Premcor Inc. According to the author, the company needs a solution that would serve it well as it grows and to that end, it has embraced the concept of SOA.
