ABSTRACT
The article reports on the threat posed by Olympic visitors in 2008 to the Great Wall of China. Badaling, the most popular stretch of the wall, happens to be the section closest to Beijing and the Olympic Games venues. Since opening to tourism in 1957, this five-mile-long rampart has borne the brunt of vandalism, graffiti, erosion and litter, while locals have been borrowing bricks for construction since the Cultural Revolution.
