ABSTRACT
The article reports that several organizations have requested to the U.S. Joint Commission urging that the interim standards, Element of Performance (EP)1, for hospitals be reinstated immediately and be maintained until a full review of the current standard is completed and any required changes are finalized. The organizations include Emergency Nurses Association (ENA), American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) and American Academy of Emergency Medicine (AAEM). They stress that the interim action standards were feasible to implement in the emergency department (ED) because the impact on patients in the ED would be minimal and a retrospective view would require minimal staff additions. The bases of the associations' rationale are presented.
