ABSTRACT
The article focuses on the issue of sovereignty over the West Bank and Gaza and the upright rejection of the main Palestinian factions against the leadership of Yasir Arafat, chairman of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO). It concerns the fundamentalist Muslims who reject any talk of peaceful coexistence with Israel, and believe that there is no room for Jewish sovereignty in Muslim lands. Also discussed is the rhetoric of fundamentalist Islam and the separation between religion and nationalism that long hindered Palestinian political activity in the territories occupied by Israel since 1967.
