ABSTRACT
The article focuses on the contribution of Refugee Studies Centre (RSC) to the study of refugees and forced migration as part of its 25th anniversary celebration. At first, the RSC courted controversy by challenging the accepted model and practice of humanitarianism represented by the assistance programmes of mainly northern nongovernmental organizations (NGO), intergovernmental agencies and donors in the refugee crises of the 1970s and 1980s in Africa, South East Asia and Central America. Its early work questioned the uncritical acceptance of humanitarianism by demonstrating the often negative impacts of assistance, such as refugee dependency, powerlessness and loss of autonomy.
