ABSTRACT
The article discusses carbon offsets, an emission trading scheme that allows consumers to invest in clean energy to offset the impact of a trip they have taken or a product they have bought. The article discusses the difficulties of buying carbon offsets in the U.S., where carbon-emission trading is not regulated. Several dozen companies in the U.S. sell offsets with prices ranging from $5 to $25 per ton of carbon. The article discusses other options a consumer has to reduce carbon emissions including using compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFL), installing a programmable thermostat, and insulating a home water heater.
