ABSTRACT
Walls are among the oldest strategies for tightening borders and protecting a country's interests. Examples include the Great Wall of China, the 25-foot (7.6 meter) high fortress that Israel began building in 2002 on the West Bank, and the combination fence/wall that has been partially constructed by the United States along the Mexican border. Land disputes, sectarian rifts, illegal immigration, drug or arms smugglers, and terrorism are some of the reasons why modern governments construct such barriers.
