ABSTRACT
The article reports that the Australian Parliament may vote on embryonic stem cell research after an announcement in November 2007 that adult cells can be reprogrammed to become pluripotent stem cells. Retroviruses will be used as vectors to introduce stem cell associated-genes into adult cells but researchers believe that cells created this way is highly susceptible to cancer. Induced pluripotency offers a second way to seek the benefit of stem cell research and it is not reason enough to abandon embryonic stem cell research, the article reports.
