ABSTRACT
The article discusses the effect of Iraqi militia groups called Concerned Local Citizens (CLCs), hired by the U.S. military to act as local police forces in Iraq, on the lives of local women. CLC groups have helped to decrease the influence of Al Qaeda and insurgent forces while simultaneously imposing strict rules governing social behavior, particularly for women. Punishment for so-called honor killings is notoriously lenient.
