ABSTRACT
The article focuses on the history of the U.S. National Guard in New Mexico. The National Guard in New Mexico recruited men in the Las Vegas, New Mexico area to serve with the assistant secretary of the U.S. Navy Theodore Roosevelt in the 1898 Spanish-American War. The Las Vegas unit did its annual training at the ranges of southern New Mexico and Fort Bliss, Texas, along with other northern units of New Mexico. The commanding officers of the training were William Fields and Lawrence Fulgenzi.
