ABSTRACT
This article discusses lists of endangered bird species in the U.S. The list of species given protection under the U.S. Endangered Act (ESA) includes 89 species, subspecies or populations and 17 are considered extinct or likely extinct. List under the ESA is a policy process, not a scientific process, so that many endangered species do not appear on the list. It is stated that perhaps the most widely accepted, scientifically derived list is the one from the International Union for the Conservation of Nature.
