ABSTRACT
The article reports on the cultural history of the Chinese garden. Tracts of land were walled off by the emperors for hunting parties and military practice. Two spiritual traditions emerge, Confucianism and Taoism during the period of the warring states. When Emperor Huangdi unified the warring kingdoms in the Qin dynasty, he added the flora and fauna from his former rivals' landscapes to the imperial garden instead of destroying them.
