ABSTRACT
The article discusses the context of transformation for university education in Lithuania. It states that, although the country is characterized by high indicators of formal education, it is ranked last place in terms of effectiveness from using education. The circumstance represents, for the country as a member of the European Union, a "push factor" for rewriting the national strategy to form the information society. It contends that, during the country's transition, the number of college students stood at 67,300 in 1990 and in 2007, it reached 190,700. It notes that there is a significant rise in the role that universities play as the chief catalyst of economic growth.
