ABSTRACT
In this article, the author reviews the literature pertaining to the effects of iron deficiency anemia (IDA) and of iron deficiency without anemia (IDNA) in the athletic population, specifically female athletes. The author describes the risk factors that make females more prone to this micronutrient disorder. He also discusses the nutritional status of iron and the iron metabolism. In addition, the author examines how the disorder develops and its affects on performance.
