ABSTRACT
The power output characteristics of a novel vertical axis wind turbine system were investigated via computational fluid dynamics. The system was tested at seven wind velocities. Results showed that the efficiency of the new system increases with increasing wind velocities up to approximately 30 m/s, after which the efficiency remains constant at 0.45. Moreover it was found that system reacts more quickly to changes in wind velocity once it is in motion and reaches a steady state. A new equation was developed to predict the power generation as a function of time and wind velocity. The use of the equation in predicting power performance is discussed in the paper.
