ABSTRACT
This article explains that the biofuels industry, affected by low crude oil prices and the global financial crisis, is facing serious challenges on two fronts as it transitions to the next generation of ethanol production. Ethanol companies are bracing for new state and federal directives aimed at curbing greenhouse gases emitted at any point in their fuels' production cycle. Already, 23 ethanol plants have shut down because the recession has put a damper on demand for vehicle fuel of any sort. Yet biofuel is enjoying support from President Barack Obama.
