ABSTRACT
The article discusses how ataman Fyodor Taube came to represent the cultural identity of Cossacks in the Don Cossack Host region of Russia. The author compares Taube's life to that of former Russian prime minister Pyotr Stolypin, who came to represent Russian nationalism and became an icon following his assassination. The author comments on how Taube's views were reported in propaganda published through conservative journalism. Taube's sudden death, like Stolypin's, transformed him into an icon representative of Cossackness.
