Pavilions on the Periphery

May 2009
ArtAsiaPacific;May/Jun2009, Issue 63, p103
The article focuses on the exhibits at the Venice Biennale in Venice, Italy, mounted by Palestine and the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The Palestinian exhibit explores issues of mobility for Palestinians because of the Israeli tightening of the Gaza border. The article notes that Palestinian artist Taysir Batniji left to attend an exhibit in Amman, Jordan, in 2006 and has not been allowed to reenter Palestine since then. The show is meant to foster collaboration among Palestinian institutions. The artist Khalil Rabah will present wall-mounted texts, video and live performance documenting artistic collaborations with residents of 50 West Bank villages to reactivate historic buildings destroyed or damaged in the conflict. The UAE exhibit showcases works from its museums.
