ABSTRACT
The article focuses on the guidelines for federal funding of research on human embryonic stem cells issued by the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) in 2009. Funding for research on any stem cell lines taken from cloned human embryos through somatic cell nuclear transfer is not allowed based on the guidelines. The NIH is said to have decided not to consider research on alternative cellular reprogramming methods for federal funding. The legality of human reproductive cloning is retained at the federal level.
