ABSTRACT
The author talks about the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) in relation to the aim of energy independence by the U.S. In the author's opinion, open drilling in the ANWR may present a short-term solution to the need of renewable energy sources yet will only be effective with the establishment of projects designed to develop alternative energy sources. The importance of oil in the economic and military interests of the country is also explored. It is said that the impact of drilling on the 1002 Area in the ANWR is yet to be determined.
