ABSTRACT
The article discusses a study where HIV-infected and HIV-negative adults in Tanzania with pulmonary tuberculosis were given supplemental micronutrients in addition to antituberculosis medication. The regimen consisting of micronutrients such as vitamin A, thiamine and vitamin E reduced the risk of tuberculosis recurrence by 45% and 63% in HIV-infected patients. It concludes that HIV infection and tuberculosis are caused by poor nutrition and providing nutritional support to patients can improve the outcome of conventional therapy and reduce death rate.
