ABSTRACT
The article focuses on the prevalence of sea piracy. It cites that the attacks of pirates off the coast of Somalia have brought several political issues, such as the policing of territorial waters, arming of merchant ships and port management. According to the International Maritime Bureau (IMB) of the International Chamber of Commerce, about 102 incidents of sea piracy were reported in the first quarter of 2009. It notes that ransom of cargo and crew in the case of bigger ships or robbery in smaller ones is the usual goal of the pirates.
