ABSTRACT
The article presents a discussion on concepts of motherhood throughout German history. It is noted that during the Protestant Reformation in Germany, mothers were believed to be good mothers if they made motherhood their only focus of life. Descriptions are also given of extreme notions of mothers' importance as child bearers, career women, or childless academics and social workers. Further comments are provided concerning the representation of mothers in German mass media, and note is taken of German mothers' everyday lifestyles in various social and economic circles.
